The lazy consensus is predictable. Magazines are running breathless spreads about how kinetic interceptors and net-guns are finally closing the counter-UAS gap against cheap loitering munitions.

They are celebrating a shiny object while ignoring the structural arithmetic of attrition.

I have watched defense contractors extract billions of dollars for solutions that solve tactical vanity metrics while losing strategic wars. If you think spending a quarter-million dollars on a specialized missile or a high-end kinetic interceptor to take out a four-hundred-dollar hobby drone modified with a strap-on grenade is a victory, you do not understand economics. You are playing a losing financial game with a fixed bankroll.

The Economics of Asymmetry

If your counter-UAS solution requires a dedicated vehicle, a specialized crew, and an uninterrupted power supply just to knock down a single consumer-grade aerial vehicle, you have built a museum piece, not a frontline defense system.

What We Should Be Doing Instead

Stop looking for the magic silver bullet interceptor. The answer to cheap drones is not expensive counter-drones; it is distributed, low-cost layered denial and localized kinetic saturation.

We need to pivot toward high-volume, cheap localized effectors. Think distributed shotgun-style smart munitions fired from standard infantry platforms, paired with ubiquitous, cheap acoustic and passive radio-frequency sensors that do not emit signature radiation. We need to push the defensive capability down to the squad level rather than relying on centralized, multi-million-dollar air defense batteries that cannot scale.

Until military procurement stops rewarding contractors for building gold-plated solutions to cheap problems, every exercise in Germany will just be an expensive rehearsal for the next strategic surprise.

Stop funding the illusion. Build for the math.
