Why People Are Swarming the Hong Kong Waterfront This Week

Victoria Harbour looked different on Thursday morning. If you woke up early enough, you caught the sight of two massive warships cutting through the early morning mist.

The guided-missile destroyer Nanning and the guided-missile frigate Hengyang sailed into Hong Kong waters around 7 a.m., surrounded by local patrol boats. By mid-morning, crowds of residents and tourists lined the Tsim Sha Tsui and Central waterfronts. They weren't just catching a casual view. People were trying to get a glimpse of a rare five-day naval showcase that doesn't happen often in the city.

The event marks the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China. The Ministry of National Defense planned this stop to give residents and visitors a look at modern naval hardware. For the average person, it’s a chance to step onto warships that usually operate far out at sea.

What to Expect at the Stonecutters Island Naval Base

The ships are moored at the PLA Hong Kong Garrison naval base on Stonecutters Island. Public tours run from Friday through Sunday. If you managed to grab a ticket online, you're getting access to a secure military site.

This isn't a passive museum tour. The navy set up live training demonstrations, military drill performances, and weapon displays. You can even try out standard military rations if you want to know what sailors eat during long deployments.

The main attractions are the ships themselves. The Nanning and the Hengyang are making their first-ever port calls to Hong Kong. Walking the decks of a Type 052D destroyer gives you a real sense of scale that photos cannot replicate.

The Hardware Docked in Victoria Harbour

The choice of ships for this visit highlights modern naval engineering. These aren't older ceremonial vessels. They are active frontline warships.

  • The Nanning (Hull 162): A Type 052D guided-missile destroyer. It forms the backbone of the fleet's surface combat capabilities. It features advanced active electronically scanned array radar systems and vertical launch cells capable of firing both anti-air and anti-ship missiles.
  • The Hengyang (Hull 568): A Type 054A guided-missile frigate. Known as a workhorse vessel, it specializes in anti-submarine warfare and fleet air defense.

Seeing these ships up close explains why military enthusiasts flooded local internet forums this week. The vessels arrived complete with their ship-borne helicopters and marine detachments on deck, offering a full picture of an active naval task group.

How to Get the Most Out of the Open House Days

If you have tickets for the weekend entry, keep a few practical things in mind. Security at Stonecutters Island is strict. Expect airport-style screening at the gates. Bring valid identification matching your registration details, or security will turn you away.

Wear comfortable shoes. Naval vessels are full of steep ladders, narrow corridors, and raised thresholds. It's not a friendly environment for open-toed shoes or heels.

If you missed out on the base entry passes, you can still get excellent views from the public waterfront. The high ground around the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and the West Kowloon Cultural District offers clear lines of sight toward the naval berths. Bring a camera with a decent zoom lens early in the afternoon when the sun lights up the hulls. The fleet stays in Hong Kong until July 6 before heading back out to active duty.
